A family in Lamu is crying out for answers following the mysterious disappearance of their loved one who was abducted by masked gunmen last week in Kiunga.
According to the family members of Mohammed Mohammed a 41 year old man, was abducted by masked gunmen on September 12 2025 at his residence in Kiunga ward.
The family believes the men may have been police officers, but authorities have not confirmed any operation in the area on that day.
Mohammed’s whereabouts remain unknown more than a week later, with the trail now cold and his loved ones desperate for any information.
Speaking to the media today in Amu Island, his brother, Ali Omar Mohammed stated that so far they have contacted all government security agencies demanding to know his whereabouts to which they have corroborated that they are not aware of his abduction.
“The government agencies from the Anti Terror Police to the DCI units in Kiunga and Lamu Headquarters have been categorical that they do not have our brother, however we need answers as to how Mohammed could be abducted and there are no answers from the government,” Ali said.
Sentiments echoed by Haki Africa Rapid Response Officer Matheus Shipeta who called on the government to promptly provide answers as to the whereabouts of Mohammed, whom he said is a fisherman.
“Speedy investigations should start to ascertain his whereabouts, following the manner in which he was abducted it is highly likely that it could be the police,” Shipeta said.
He further added that if it is not the police, security agencies are bound by duty to follow up on how such a disappearance can be possible without any investigation being launched.
On his part Yusuf Abubakar, Haki Africa Executive Director stated that it is unfortunate that such disappearances continue happening in Lamu despite strengthened community policing and engagement with communities and security agencies especially with the Boni area.
“The President has been very vocal in saying that abductions should cease, and thus it falls on the security agencies to ensure that Mohammed is returned within seven days,” Abubakar said.
On his part Lamu County Commissioner Wesley Koech said that he was unaware of any abductions in Kiunga by security agencies and stated that investigations will be done to ascertain the whereabouts of Mohammed.
