A total of 549 farmers in Kwale have benefitted from free galla bucks for meat with 30 others getting borana bulls for beef to improve livestock breeding in a bid to ensure the region gets better drought resistance breeds.
The bulls and bucks meant for meat which are drought tolerant are expected to spread among livestock keepers in the area with farmers being expected to improve economically by selling the breed to other people.
Kwale governor Fatuma Achani said that the project will ensure farmers in the area change their cattle and goats breed so that they can have better breeds for sale in future.
“Once every livestock farmer gets the buck and bull breed that will be very important because they will be able to get money out of it by selling them for money,” she said.
She said that county agricultural extension officers will be checking on the livestock to ensure they are reared properly.
Deputy governor Chirema Kombo said that the county government is committed to support farmers to have good breeds while urging them to play their part in keeping them.
Kwale county Agriculture CECM Roman Shera urged farmers to ensure they follow all the rearing requirements to ensure they achieve good results.
The farmers were however warned against slaughtering or selling them instead of keeping them since that will attract a police case to ensure government projects benefit locals.
Kwale county government aims to ensure farmers improve economically through the meat livestock project as well as ensuring the county is food secure.
