A senior police officer from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) in Kwale County died in a road accident in Diani on Monday morning.

The police officer who was alone in a RAV-4 vehicle was heading to Likoni from Msambweni.

Reports indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle before rolling and plunging into the Mwachema River.

The incident attracted Diani and Tiwi residents and passers-by thronging the scene in disbelief wanting to know what may have caused the accident.

According to one of the eyewitnesses, Ali Namatsi, the driver might have dozed off causing the accident.

“It is also possible that the automatic car locked itself making it difficult for the driver to take control of the steering wheel thus plunging into the Mwachema River,” he added.

Msambweni Police Commander Francis Gachoki confirmed the incident and said that police are investigating with an intention to unearth what happened.

“The car lost control and rolled over a couple of times, throwing him out. He died on the spot,” said the Police Commander.

Mr. Gachoki then added that the Traffic Police arrived at the scene taking the deceased to Agha Khan Mortuary and towed the wrecked vehicle to Diani Police Station.

The wrecked vehicle awaits inspection from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to determine the cause of the accident.

The Police Commander has urged all road users to be careful and maintain road safety when approaching the Mwachema River to avoid future accidents.

This accident follows one that happened earlier this month claiming the lives of two people through a road accident.
