More than 200 women’s groups in Kwale County have been registered as companies, with over 20 successfully securing tenders from both government and NGOs.
The new development comes as part of the county government’s efforts to empower women.
For years, women in Kwale have faced societal challenges due to entrenched social norms and outdated traditions.
The women were often marginalized and viewed as inferior, with their roles confined to domestic responsibilities.
However, under Governor Fatuma Achani’s leadership, there has been a significant shift.
Her administration has launched numerous projects aimed at empowering women socio-economically.
Many women in the county have seen their lives transformed through activities such as agriculture, savings plans, tendering, fishing, and leadership opportunities.
During a share out event in Dzomba Ward, Lunga-Lunga Sub-County, Governor Achani reiterated her commitment to supporting women, emphasizing the importance of enhancing their resilience and fighting poverty.
“For a long time, women have struggled to improve their economic status. My administration has prioritized their empowerment,” Achani said.
She said that empowering women not only improves their livelihoods but also contributes to a more stable and developed society.
Achani said that her administration aims to break the barriers that have long hindered women’s development.
She emphasized her desire to create a conducive environment where everyone, regardless of gender, tribe, or religious status, has an equal opportunity to thrive.
Achani said advancing women’s socio-economic status reflects her vision for a more equitable and prosperous county.
She noted that under her leadership, Kwale County is witnessing a transformative shift in how women are perceived and supported.
The county chief said women are now treated as equals and she will put on more efforts to prove that women are capable.
She said the success of the registered women’s groups and their achievements in securing tenders marks a pivotal step in transforming the community’s lives.
Achani said she is looking forward to creating a resilient and independent woman.
She said the ongoing women’s initiatives seek to ensure that the gains made are sustainable and that all residents benefit from inclusive development.
“By continuing to champion women’s empowerment, my administration aims to foster a more balanced and progressive society for the future,” she said.
Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo urged women and youths to seize the available opportunities to transform their lives.
He said the county is committed to supporting them but noted that it is essential for the targeted groups to actively engage and step forward.
Kombo encouraged more women to formalize their groups into registered companies.
He said the move would enable them to engage in business with various entities, including the government and corporate sector, thereby enhancing their socio-economic empowerment.
Kombo said that women’s empowerment signifies a major step toward overcoming historical barriers and promoting equality.
He said with strong support from both the county leadership and the community, the vision of a more equitable society is set to become a tangible reality.
