More than 60 children of the Lea Mwanaorphanage in Malindi Sub County of Kilifi County experienced a celebration that will remain in their hearts fforeve this years Christmas.
The event, organized by Michele Santorelli, an Italian philanthropist currently living in Bulgaria, was much more than just a festive gathering—it was a day of transformation and hope.
The Santorelli family (Michele, Roberto, and Giovanni), who inherited a strong sense of solidarity from their parents, is deeply committed to numerous social initiatives in both Bulgaria and Italy.
Together, all three brothers are involved in various social projects, including the family foundation “Creators of Hope,” which supports artists with disabilities and promotes inclusion.
The Christmas celebration which was full of pomp and colour at the home in Thalathamel area near Malindi town was attended by Kenyan government representatives, religious leaders from Catholic, Orthodox, Christian, and Muslim communities, as well as local authorities.
Each of them contributed to the mission of the orphanage, embodying the unity and generosity that define the Christmas spirit.
The event also included a musical band and traditional tribal dances, further enriching the festive atmosphere.
To conclude the celebration, a special cake decorated with the flags of Kenya, Italy, and Bulgaria was served, symbolizing the connection between the three nations.
Santorelli’s contributions to the Lea Mwana orphanage went far beyond the festivities.
Recognizing the challenges the centre faces during the lean months of May and June, when tourists and volunteers are scarce, he provided food supplies to sustain the children during these difficult times.
Additionally, the orphanage’s sanitary facilities were repaired, improving the living conditions for the 60 children who call it home. For Christmas, Michele Santorelli gifted each child new clothes and accessories, ensuring they felt special and celebrated during the holidays.
Moreover, in an extraordinary gesture of support for their education, he secured the entire school budget for 2025 for all children currently studying, providing them with the resources needed to build a better future.
In his speech, Michele Santorelli shared words of encouragement and hope: “Education is the key to a better future.
“Every time you learn something new, you take a step closer to your dreams. Life may sometimes feel hard, but you have the strength to overcome any challenge. Remember, kindness makes the world a better place,” he said.
Santorelli also revealed he held a meeting with Malindi Member of Parliament Amina Mnyazi to discuss potential collaborations in the areas of integration, education, and economic development between Kenya, Italy, and Bulgaria.
The day was filled with laughter, joy, and gratitude as the children and staff celebrated together.
The event highlighted the power of community and the importance of giving back, inspiring everyone present to continue working toward a better future for Kenya’s youth.

Agnes Mshambala Director founder Leah Mwana Children’s home could not hide her joy upon receiving the support from Santorelli.
She said they have never had such a Christmas celebration in the home adding that the Italian Philanthropist had brought joy and hope.
She said they have four students in university and others in high school and primary who all require support to achieve their dreams
Moses Mwalimu Chair Board of Management Leah Mwana thanked the Santorelli family for the big support offered to the home and called on other well-wishers and donors to support them.
Samuel Shauri an orphan at the home who is in secondary school also thanked the Santorelli family for their gesture and urged others to come in and help them.
This Christmas at Lea Mwana orphanage was a testament to how compassion, solidarity, and dedication can change lives, offering hope and opportunities to the next generation of Kenya.
