An angry mob lynched a suspected armed man to death at Vyemani Grounds in Shikaadabu, Mombasa County after he fired several shots in the air with an AK-47.

According to the police report, officers from Inuka Police Station received a distress call of gunshots in the Vyemani area and responded swiftly.

“Officers on patrol along the Likoni-Ugunda Road checkpoint immediately rushed to the scene where they found the lifeless body of the suspect lying on the ground and recovered an AK-47 rifle placed beside him,” reads the report.

The police also recovered 12 rounds of ammunition which were loaded in the riffle, a bag, four spent cartridges, a mobile phone, and the motorcycle.

The report said that the suspect had hired a motorcycle from the Likoni Primary area to Vyemani Grounds, and upon arrival, the man alighted from the motorcycle but began making numerous phone calls instead of paying the rider, Antony Otieno.

Growing suspicious, Otieno demanded his fare but the suspect, in response, retrieved an AK-47 rifle from a small bag and brandished his gun and fired shots into the air, apparently to intimidate the rider.

In a courageous move, Otieno wrestled the suspect off the motorcycle, sparking a violent struggle.

During the altercation, the suspect fired several shots, but Otieno managed to disarm him despite sustaining injuries. He was bitten on his nose.

The commotion drew the attention of nearby residents who arrived in large numbers and began pelting the suspect with stones until he succumbed to his injuries.

The chaotic scene left two innocent bystanders wounded by stray bullets.

Mary Trizer sustained injuries to her left thigh and abdomen, while Claudia Mwashikaji suffered a gunshot wound to his right abdomen.

The injured were rushed to Likoni Sub-County Hospital for treatment.

The deceased body was taken to the Coast General Mortuary for identification and a post-mortem.

    Police have launched further investigation.
