Kwale county woman Member of Parliament Fatuma Masito has flagged off distribution of relief food to over 600 marginalized people across the region.
Through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund, Masito said that the relief food targets disabled, widows and orphans selected from drought prone areas of Kinango,LungaLunga and some parts of Matuga.
Kwale County has estimated about 200,000 locals facing starvation due to prolonged drought according to the National Drought Management Authority.
Masito said that the food distribution will bring a positive impact to the lives of the local people especially those with no food.
“The food shortage comes with a great burden upon people, the prices of food have risen and they cannot afford a day meal. The economy is high which most of the people cannot afford,” she said.
Masito also added that most affected areas around Kwale are LungaLunga and Kinango out of the four sub-counties.
Although the exercise will not reach all affected, Masito said that more intervention will be sought to help locals while appealing to the national government to intervene.
She said that the majority of the targeted families in the relief food distribution by her office are unable to take their children to school due to lack of food.
Kwale county NGAAF coordinator Nelly Àmoite said that the situation of starvation and drought in the area is worse and requires more intervention.
Amoite said that the food distribution will go a long way in supporting the affected families as more intervention is sought.
