The government is actively addressing the surge in juvenile gang activities in Kwale County, according to Deputy Government Spokesperson Mwanaisha Chidzuga.
Chidzuga, following a security meeting held at Kwale Cultural Center with county security officials and area chiefs, emphasized the importance of collaboration among law enforcement agencies, community leaders, and local authorities in combating the rising menace.
The meeting was prompted by increasing incidents of violence perpetrated by juvenile gangs, causing concerns over the safety and security of residents.
Chidzuga stressed the need for a coordinated approach to tackle the root causes of insecurity, calling on area chiefs to facilitate dialogue and cooperation within their communities.
“There’s a need for a collaborative approach to address these challenges, I urge all area chiefs and their assistants to play a central role in handling this matter at a community level,” said Chidzuga.
Additionally, she highlighted the significance of community engagements and youth empowerment initiatives, advocating for rehabilitation and reintegration programs to steer youth away from criminal activities.
Recent incidents, such as the attack of students from Technical University of Mombasa Kwale campus, have underscored the urgency of the situation.
Last week four students were attacked by a gang of 50 youths and left to nurse serious injuries.
They were attacked at Mbuwani area along Kona Musa-Mabokoni road on their way to the University for a Night Kesha.
A motorcycle they were using was stolen in the incident.
Kwale County Commissioner Stephen Orinde however confirmed the arrest of 25 member’s suspects of the juvenile gangs responsible for terrorizing residents.
Orinde emphasized that the crackdown is aimed to dismantle notorious gangs involved in robbery, extortion, and violence.
”The apprehended suspects currently in custody pending further investigation”, said Orinde.
According to Orinde, the arrested individuals, all juveniles, range in age from 13 to 25 years old are believed to be members of multiple gangs operating in the area.
Local authorities have expressed their commitment to thoroughly investigate the activities of these gangs and bring those responsible for criminal acts to justice.
The crackdown reflects the government’s determination to tackle the root causes of gang violence and protect the welfare of residents.
“In recent months the county has grappled with a rise in gang-related incidents which has prompted the authorities to intensify efforts to combat organized crime and gang activities, the successful operation to apprehend the 25 gang member suspects represents a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to curb violence,” said Orinde.
While acknowledging the progress made in combating gang-related crime, authorities recognize the need for continued efforts to address underlying issues driving youth involvement in gangs.
Orinde reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of residents through social and economic interventions aimed at providing alternative opportunities for youth and reducing the influence of gangs in the community.
However residents were urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement efforts to build a safer environment for all.
