A couple arrested in connection with the brutal murder of Jane Achieng’ Amullo in Likoni, Mombasa County, failed to take a plea on Wednesday 30th April, after informing the court that their lawyer was not present.
McDonald Ochieng’ Ouma and Alice Akinyi appeared before Lady Justice Wendy Micheni at the Mombasa High Court, where they were expected to answer to murder charges following the conclusion of investigations by officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The suspects declined to take a plea, insisting that their legal counsel must be present before they respond to the charges.
Their plea was in relation to the gruesome murder of Jane Achieng Omullo, whose dismembered body was discovered on the morning of February 8, 2025, stuffed in a sack outside a rental house in the Approved area of Likoni Sub-county.
Justice Micheni, noting the absence of their advocate, directed that the accused be remanded at Shimo La Tewa GK Prison.
She ordered that the suspects be produced in court on April 15 for plea-taking, giving time for their lawyer to be present.
According to police reports, the suspects were arrested at their home in Uyugis, Homa Bay County, after weeks of investigations led detectives to link them to the killing.
The pair were later transported to Mombasa, where they were held as detectives from the Homicide Unit finalized their investigations.
Jane Achieng Omullo had been reported missing days before her remains were found in a sack under suspicious circumstances.
Subsequent investigations led to the recovery of some of the missing body parts in Kwale County several weeks later. However, police have yet to locate all of the victim’s remains.
The motive behind the killing remains unclear, with detectives continuing to piece together the events leading up to her death.
Jane’s body was preserved at the Mombasa County Referral Hospital Morgue before being transported to her rural home in Rachuonyo, Homa Bay County for burial.
