A former Jubilee nominated county assembly member has been approved to serve as the Kwale County Tourism, Trade and Enterprise Development executive member by the county assembly of Kwale.

His approval was made on Monday 17 April 2023 during a special sitting that was called to deliberate on the reports by the county assembly appointment committee.

The motion was moved by nominated MCA Josephine Kinyanjui and seconded by Bongwe-Gombato MCA Tumaini Mwachaunga.

That was after county assembly members debated in the motion for the approval of Michael Mutua alongside Karuwa Kulola who was also approved for Public Service and Administration.

Mutua has experience in the hotel industry for many years after working in various hotels in Diani and some parts of the country.

During his vetting by the assembly, he said that he will work to ensure new tourist circuits are tapped to attract more visitors to the area.

Some of them he said bird watching at Mkanda dam in Kubo South, maji-moto springs in Dzombo and Kubo South as well as unique animals within Shimba-Hills national reserve.

He said that the issue will ensure that visitors do not just focus on staying along the beach but also go to the villages for other attraction sites thus creating more job opportunities.

The county government, he said should partner with investors in ensuring the beach is clean since Diani Beach has been voted several times as the best beach.

His appointment came some months after the assembly declined to approve Ali Mondo for the same post.

Kwale residents lauded the assembly for approving Mutua saying he has experience in the tourism sector and therefore a great asset for the Kwale people.

Locals took to social media to laud Kwale County governor Fatuma Achani for giving Mutua the chance while lauding Mutua for the appointment.

“Mabrouk for your confirmation and approval as the Waziri Tourism, Trade and enterprise development by the county assembly of Kwale. May Allah guide, protect and bless you abundantly, Amin Thumma Amin,” said Remmy Mackenzie.

“Congratulations are in order Michael Mutua the new CEC for tourism, trade and enterprise development, I believe you are a perfect fit for that position,” said Haron Kennedy.

Mutua is among Diani walkers, a group of passionate members who walk every Saturday in Diani to advocate for good health in a walk dubbed Step 4 one health.
