A fisherman has been reported missing wnd two rescued after a boat capsized in the deep waters of the Indian Ocean off the Jomo Kenyatta public beach in Bamburi-in Mombasa.

According to police the man is suspected to have drowned after the 7 pm incident on Thursday evening.

Police says that the victim was with his two friends who managed to swim for hours to safety before being rescued by other fishermen who were in the area.

The two were rushed to the hospital immediately where they are recuperating.

One of the survivors reported that their friend was overwhelmed by the waves and could have possibly drowned.

“The strong waves overpowered the boat and tossed us inside the ocean, we were left to fight for our own survival and that is how our colleague went missing”. he said.

The two survivors are said to have swum for more than five hours in the deep waters of the ocean.

Officials said that they are in stable condition and are still recuperating in the hospital.

The matter was reported at Nyali police station and the authorities said that until now they have no information regarding the missing fisherman.

The search and recovery operation has been launched with the authorities appealing for members of the public to volunteer information in case they spot any floating body in the ocean.

Fishermen have been urged to be cautious of the changing weather patterns in the Indian Ocean with strong winds and high waves toppling small fishing vessels.
