A suspected armed robber was fatally shot on Tuesday morning in Masjid Ghazal Village, Likoni Sub-County, Mombasa County, during a botched robbery attempt that escalated into violence.
According to a police report, the deceased, identified as Hamisi, also known as “Shungi,” was part of a gang of four armed with machetes (pangas) and accused of terrorizing residents in the area.
The incident unfolded after officers from Inuka Police Station, led by Corporal Mungala Mazeras, responded to a distress call from a concerned resident. Upon arriving at the scene, police found the gang robbing and threatening members of the public.
When confronted, the suspects reportedly became aggressive and attempted to attack the officers with their weapons.
Despite a warning shot fired in the air, the group continued to charge, prompting officers to open fire in self-defense.
Hamisi was struck in the head, with the bullet passing through the back of his skull and exiting through his forehead. A machete was recovered near his body, while the other three suspects managed to flee.
Police have launched a manhunt for the escapees and are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in their arrest.
Preliminary investigations indicate the gang had been targeting unsuspecting residents in the village for some time.
