A tragic swimming excursion turned fatal on Friday evening after a Kenya Air Force officer was swept away and drowned by strong ocean currents at the popular Diani Kongo Beach in Kwale County.
The deceased identified as Senior Private Shem Kiprotich, a Kenya Air Force service member based at the Mtongwe naval base.
According to a police report filed at the Diani Police Station by Sergeant Karama and Sergeant Nzai of the Kenya Navy, Senior Private Kiprotich had gone out swimming at around 4:45 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2026, accompanied by six of his colleagues
While in the water, he was suddenly overwhelmed and dragged deep into the ocean by powerful undercurrents. Desperate attempts by his colleagues to rescue him from the rough waters were unsuccessful.
A multi-agency search and rescue operation was launched immediately. At around 5:35 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2026, a Kenya Navy search team discovered his body washed up on the shoreline, approximately 700 metres from where he had vanished.
Regular police from Diani, alongside detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) personnel from Kwale, visited the scene to process it.
Investigators confirmed that the body was found clad in black shorts and bore no visible physical injuries.
Following the initial forensic examination by CSI officers at the beach, the body was recovered and airlifted by a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) aircraft to the Defence Forces Memorial Hospital in Nairobi, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
The file has been handed over to the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (SCCIO) in Msambweni to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities have issued an urgent safety advisory following the incident, urging holidaymakers and local residents to exercise extreme caution when swimming in the Indian Ocean, warning that volatile tides and strong currents pose a severe danger even to highly trained and experienced swimmers
