The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC, through its Lower Coast Regional office in Mombasa, has arrested a Kenya Power senior officer in Diani- Kwale County for demanding bribes.

Evans Otieno Ochieng was arrested on alleged extortion charges according to EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi while confirming the incident.

It is alleged that the Kenya Power Kwale debt controller based in Ukunda office demanded a bribe of Kes. 100,000 and received an advance payment of Kes. 70,000 from the complainant in order to reconnect a disconnected power meter.

Ngumbi said that the suspect was apprehended after the Commission received concurrence of the Director of Public Prosecutions to charge him with the offences.

“Investigations commenced upon receipt of allegations that Evans Otieno Ochieng, the KPLC Kwale Debts Controller, based at Ukunda Office solicited a financial advantage of Kes. 100,000/= as an inducement so as to reconnect the power he had disconnected on 18th October, 2021 due to accrued bills at Pine Grove Estate,” said Ngumbi.

Evans Ochieng is expected to be taken to Kwale law court for extortion charges to take a plea before the case against him commences.

Ngumbi urged members of the public to continue exposing public officials extorting money from them in order to offer public services.

Cases of extortion for public services have been rampant in Kwale with police road blocks in the area being a thorn in the flesh for matatu operators and locals.
