At least 250 teachers across Kenya have been trained in a groundbreaking initiative aimed at integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into classrooms, in a bid to revolutionize the education sector leveraging on technology.
The free training, provided through a partnership between Tech Kids Africa, Google Deep Mind, and the Raspberry Pi Foundation, seeks to equip educators with AI skills that will enhance their teaching methods and influence students’ career paths.
The program Experience AI which has been launched, is set to benefit over 20,000 students in both private and public schools across the country.
Teachers from counties such as Mombasa, Nairobi, Meru, and Taita Taveta have already undergone the training, and the number is expected to grow in the coming months.
Paul Akwabi, the CEO of Tech Kids Africa, emphasized the importance of adapting education to match the fast-paced advancements in technology, saying that the educators will be empowered with AI and Machine Learning to help them integrate the skills in their classrooms.
“We want to ensure that both teachers and students are well-prepared for the future, where AI and other advanced technologies play a central role,” he said.
The initiative not only aims to enhance classroom experiences but also to guide students in making informed career choices by exposing them to AI early in their academic journeys.
Teachers Service Commission ICT head Cyrus Kamau revealed that plans are underway to train at least 100,000 more teachers nationwide.
“This will ensure AI becomes a fundamental part of the national curriculum,” he noted, underscoring the program’s transformative potential in Kenyan classrooms.
Over the years, stakeholders in the Education Technology (Ed-Tech) sector have been innovating to ensure that high quality learning experiences are offered.
