Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani has urged the national government to increase the funds disbursed to counties to solve the perennial medics strikes in the country.
Governor Achani further asked the Senate and National Assembly to advocate for the increase of revenue allocation to counties so as to enable smooth sailing of essential services in the counties.
She said this after officially flagging off the International Nurses and Midwives Day by conducting a health walk from Ibiza Grounds to Mvindeni Dispensary,Ukunda ward, Msambweni Sub-county.
International Day of the Midwife and International Nurses Day recognises the incredible contribution that our nurses and midwives make to the community and the significant impact that their work has on the healthcare sector, both locally and globally.
On this day, Governor Fatuma Achani commended the healthcare workers and noted that Midwives are there at some of the most joyous and, occasionally, difficult times in people’s lives.
“Midwives and Nurses play a unique role in an extremely challenging environment – now more than ever, amid well-publicised pressures which can get in the way of their ability to provide the best care possible for every woman, baby and family, but as Kwale County Government,we have ensured our system is fair, transparent and our healthcare workers dues are all paid,” said Governor Fatuma Achani.
Governor Achani further noted that in this time of rising demand for healthcare pay rise, she hoped the midwifery standards will keep guiding midwives to listen to women and deliver the best, most person-centred care possible during pregnancy, birth and postnatal care.
“On behalf of Kwale County, I want to thank midwives and nurses everywhere for the crucial work they do, and the enormous difference that good midwifery practice can make to people’s lives. I urge the National Government to increase the county’s revenue allocation so as to provide a lasting solution to the endless strikes”, said Governor Achani.
On their part, Kwale nurses and midwives led by Head of Nurses Diana Joto and Trizah  Ireri vowed to continue working tirelessly and effortlessly despite their fellow medical practitioners striking all over the country.
