Kwale County Governor Fatuma Achani, alongside health cabinet secretary Deborah Barasa and the female governors of Kenya officially opened a state of the art Oncology centre at the Kwale Sub-County Hospital.

The Oncology centre is only the second such facility in the Coastal region, following one in Mombasa, thus marking a significant milestone in healthcare access for cancer patients in the region.

The event saw participation from the country’s female Governors, Governor Ann Waiguru of Kirinyaga county, Gladys Wanga of Homabay, Susan Kihika of Nakuru and Cecily Mbarire of Embu county, who are in Kwale for their Kwale county chapter G7 strategy launch.

The newly established centre, with a capacity of 20 units, will offer services to 20 patients simultaneously.

During the launch, Governor Achani expressed her satisfaction with the project, emphasizing that cancer treatment services are now readily available in Kwale County.

“We have highly trained experts who are equipped to provide quality care to our patients,” she noted

Achani also encouraged residents to visit local health centers for regular cancer screening to catch any issues early.

The timing of the center’s opening coincides with Cancer Awareness Month, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about the disease.

During the event the county oncology centre was also certified by the National Cancer Institute of Kenya after being awarded a certificate of recognition for its outstanding move which marks a major step in the fight against cancer, reinforcing the county’s dedication to offering specialized healthcare services to its residents.

The recognition by the National Cancer Institute is expected to further elevate the centre’s capacity, attracting more partnerships and resources to enhance cancer treatment in the region.

The oncology centre, which will serve thousands of patients, is now a beacon of hope for those battling the disease in the coastal region.

The new facility is expected to significantly improve access to cancer treatment in the region and ease the burden on patients who previously had to travel long distances.

The event was attended by several leaders including Likoni MP Mishi Mboko and Kwale county women representative Fatuma Masito, along with other national and county leaders.
