Ukrain is set to celebrate its independence day today with the event being marked in Kwale county by nationals living in the country in a special ceremony.
The country celebrates the day every 24th of August yearly, from 1991.
The Verkhvona Rada of the Ukrainian SSR declared the country’s independence, receiving support from 90% of Ukrainians during a referendum on December 1, 1991.

This signaled the end to Soviet control but created a foundation to the development of a democratic and modern state.

The ongoing challenges due to the Russian invasion into Ukraine since 22nd February 2022 has demonstrated the commitment Ukraine has in protecting its independence.
The blue and yellow colors on their flag that symbolizes unity and resilience remains an important symbol during their struggle.

In Kenya to mark the day, the largest Ukrainian flag is displayed on Diani Beach to show international solidarity.

This event is set to take place at leopard beach graced by Ukrainian Armed Forces veteran, Mr. Petro Buryak, who is in Kenya for the first time since the war began.
The 40-year old man, a former truck driver from Lviv, lost both feet and fingers on his left hand due to an anti-tank mine explosion during his fight against Russian invasion.
In the face of the injuries and a challenging recovery process, Buryak has founded the “Indomitable Warriors” charitable foundation that is aimed at providing support to fellow soldiers and military volunteers.
His visit to Kenya is mostly to help in his psychological healing and also as a gratitude gesture to the people of Kenya for their support
This independence day not only honors the country’s historical achievements but also stresses on the ongoing fight for freedom.
