Base Titanium has continued demonstrating its commitment to supporting youth development through sports in Kwale County.

The mining company recently organized the third edition of the Base Titanium Football tournament, which saw Wayzata Boys FC winning for a second consecutive year.

They defeated their opponents Rwafa FC in a 2-0 match result at Zigira Primary School ground.

Base Titanium’s involvement in organizing and sponsoring such events not only promotes sportsmanship but also provides a platform for local youth to showcase their talent and passion for football.

This year’s football tournament was themed ‘Talanta ni Mgodi, Itumie Ufaidi’.

The winners walked away with sh250, 000 and runners up sh150, 000, the third sh100, 000 and the fourth sh75, 000. The teams were also awarded football equipment and medals.

The company’s General Manager, External Affairs Simon Wall said the football tournament is part of the commitment to nurture talents and empower the community.

“We are keen on developing and improving local sporting activities and equip young people with necessary skills to succeed in sports,” he said.

Wall said the football tournament attracted at least 60 local teams across the county.

The football tournaments were started in 2021 and have continued to grow as more teams and youth embrace sports to change lives, strengthening tolerance and unity.

Wall said it is a great achievement seeing sports drawing the attention of youth to work on their talents and shun violence and drug abuse.

He said the company will continue to improve the football tournaments and use it as a tool to scout for youth’s talents, nurture them and promote local football.

Wall said the fact that thousands of people from all corners of the county and beyond came to watch the finals is proof that the impact of sports in empowering the community is enormous and can’t be ignored.

The company’s boss said since the beginning of the tournaments various teams showcased brilliant talents that can be transformed into a world-class standard if they put in more effort and get the required support.

Governor Fatuma Achani hailed the mining company for being at the frontline in nurturing talents.

She said the football tournaments are in line with the county agenda in fighting teen pregnancies, crime and drug abuse.

Achani said the football initiatives have helped keep youth out of the streets and concentrate on their talents.

She said through sports many youth have become disciplined and resilient to social vices.

Achani added that the football tournaments have instilled young people with core values and the required knowledge to nurture their talents.

β€œSports have provided an opportunity for youth to obtain the appropriate skills and platform to showcase talents and realize their full potential,” she said.e

She said the county will continue to support local football by upgrading stadiums and partnering with investors like Base Titanium to assist youth to grow and benefit from their talents.

The governor, however, warned the youth against misusing the prize funds and urged them to form companies and invest.

“Don’t share that money, it’s good you save it and work on registering companies to secure county tenders and do business,” she said.

Achani said her administration prioritizes transforming the lives of the youth, PWDs and women.
