This year’s Diani Regatta Festival attracted thousands of locals and tourists to Kenya’s world-famous coastal town, Diani.
The vibrant event, known for celebrating Swahili maritime and cultural heritage, was held along the pristine white sands of Safari Beach Hotel in Kwale County.
The event was organised by Samba Sports Youth Agenda in partnership with the Diani Regatta Trust with other key tourism stakeholders.
The theme of this year’s festival was ‘Diani Regatta where tourism meets Culture and Heritage. The event was established in 2014.
The annual festival showcases the rich traditions of the Mijikenda people, especially the Digo community, offering a glimpse into their centuries-old way of life.
Visitors were treated to a spectacular display of traditional ngalawa (outrigger canoe) races, a signature highlight of the regatta.
Skilled local fishermen navigated the turquoise waters with ease, demonstrating a craft passed down through generations.
Beyond the thrilling boat races, the festival featured an array of cultural activities, including traditional music, dance, storytelling and the vibrant Mama Lesso fashion show, where models display various ways to wear local fabrics.
Artisans displayed handcrafted wares, while local chefs prepared Swahili delicacies, allowing guests to indulge in the authentic flavors of the coast.
For tourists and younger generations, the Diani Regatta Festival served as an immersive experience offering a deeper appreciation of the coastal community’s vibrant heritage.
The event not only preserves history but also fosters cultural exchange, making it a must-attend spectacle on Kenya’s tourism calendar.

Among the notable attendees was County Executive for Tourism Michael Mutua, who lauded the festival as a crucial platform for cultural preservation and economic growth.
“We support such initiatives as it helps to showcase talents and promote tourism activities,” he said.
He said that the Kwale Government is committed to creating a conducive environment for tourism to thrive.
Mutua said the county is making efforts to improve access roads to the beaches and strengthening partnerships with various agencies to enhance security.
He also noted that the county is actively working to market Diani as a premier tourist destination, attracting both local and international visitors.
Samba Sports Youth Agenda CEO Mohammed Mwachausa emphasized the importance of reviving and sustaining traditional practices, urging the youth to embrace and celebrate their heritage.
He noted that through such cultural extravaganzas, the county aims to promote peace and security by fostering learning and appreciation of diverse cultures.
“When people come together to celebrate and share a moment, we create long-lasting harmony,” he said.
He said the festival plays a great role in uniting communities and strengthening social cohesion.
The officer said the celebrations not only enhance cultural exchange but also fosters a sense of belonging and ownership of local tourism resources.

Mwachausa further revealed that the event aimed to create socioeconomic linkages for local business owners, providing them with an opportunity to showcase their products and services to both international and local communities.
“The festival not only celebrates culture but also serves as a platform for entrepreneurs to expand their market reach and boost their income,” he added.
South Coast Residents Association Chairman, George Mokaya said that the Diani Regatta Festival plays a crucial role in breaking the misconception that tourism is reserved for a specific group of people.
He said that such cultural events encourage more locals to actively participate in tourism activities and explore opportunities within the sector.
“The Diani Regatta helps to demystify the myth that tourism is only for certain people. When diverse communities come together for such occasions, they get to experience and appreciate the various tourism opportunities available,” he said.
He added that the festival serves as a platform for inclusion, bringing together people from different backgrounds to celebrate shared heritage.
Mokaya further pointed out that beyond cultural appreciation, the regatta contributes to the local economy by boosting businesses, from small-scale vendors to established tourism enterprises.
He encouraged more residents to take advantage of such events to engage with tourism stakeholders and discover ways to benefit from the industry.
Safari Beach Hotel Front Office Department Jacinta Mwina stressed the need for continued collaboration between local authorities, tourism players, and the community to ensure that tourism remains accessible to all.
She urged the youth, in particular, to embrace opportunities in eco-tourism, hospitality, and cultural tourism, which are rapidly growing sectors.
