Mombasa county governor Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir has said that delay in salaries payment for health workers in the area is due to delayed disbursement of funds from the the national treasury.

The governor said that he is initiating programs with different financial institutions to ensure in future county workers are paid even if the national treasury delays.

This, he said will be to ensure facilitation of service delivery to citizens.

“I am working out in my 100 days in office to have agreements with finance institutions so that county staff can be paid even if the national treasury delays payment. We will be able to pay them on 26 and 27 every month. That is my commitment. So that our teachers, cleaners, drivers and nurses can be paid accordingly. Adding that “once that headache is out of my head on matters of salaries, I will take responsibility and fix what needs to be protected”.

The governor said that after addressing all the pending issues he will be able to address matters facing voters in the area by ensuring service delivery to locals.

He said the delay of cash disbursement by the national treasury to counties is a big setback in service delivery.

‘I am also working out plans to ensure I bring changes among the county workers so that service delivery to citizens is up and running smoothly,” he said.

He was addressing the 18th national head teacher’s conference in Mombasa.

His sentiments came after health workers in Mombasa County threatened to strike if their salaries are not paid on time.

The health workers said that there has been delay in salary payment which is affecting their work calling for Governor Abdulswamad Nassir to intervene.
