Riders braved the chilly weather in Watamu, Kilifi County to compete in the 7th edition of the Arabuko Sokoke MTG challenge that saw Joseph Nyaga emerge victorious.

Nyaga from team SOSSI clocked 3:29 minutes followed by Benard Njoroge of team Amani who came second in 3: 30 minutes while Ephantus Gicheru came close third clocking 3: 30 minutes.

Kendra Masiga of team Black Mamba Development Squad topped the women’s category in 4:11 minutes followed by Nancy Debe of team Kothbiro with 4: 11 minutes while Monica Jelimo of team Black Mamba Development Squad emerged third in a race that attracted 63 participants to cover 75 kilometers.

Despite drenching rain and overcast skies, a determined group of cyclists came out in large numbers to participate in the seventh edition of the Sokoke Forest MTB Challenge held over the weekend in Watamu.

The event, organized by ARocha Kenya, an environmental organization dedicated to conservation and community development, aims to raise crucial funds to support education for children living in the forest environs.

The challenge, which has become a staple in the local sports calendar, attracted both seasoned riders and enthusiastic newcomers who demonstrated impressive resilience in the face of the weather. Participants navigated a challenging course that weaved through the scenic yet rugged terrains of the Sokoke Forest, known for its rich biodiversity and ecological significance.

“Today is not just about cycling; it’s about making a difference in the lives of these children. The funds we raise will go directly to education initiatives in the forest communities, helping to ensure that children have access to learning resources and opportunities,” said Patrick Kilimo, the event coordinator for ARocha Kenya.

This year’s event featured various categories to accommodate different skill levels, including competitive races and fun rides, ensuring that everyone could contribute to the noble cause regardless of their cycling expertise. Local businesses supported the event by providing food stalls and refreshments, creating a vibrant atmosphere in the midst of the rain.

Many participants expressed their commitment to environmental conservation and education, with several expressing their admiration for A Rocha’s efforts in promoting sustainability within the region.

As the day progressed, spirits remained high amidst the rain, and the camaraderie shared by participants highlighted the strong sense of community fostering support for local educational projects. A Rocha Kenya emphasized that community involvement is vital to achieving long-term sustainability and improving the lives of those in the region.

At the end of the day, the event successfully raised significant funds that will be allocated to educational resources, scholarships, and community outreach programs aimed at empowering the youth in the forest regions. The enthusiasm and solidarity displayed by cyclists serves as a testament to the strength of community engagement in tackling local challenges.

As the sun finally peeked through the clouds late in the afternoon, participants and organizers alike celebrated their achievements, hopeful that next year’s Soto Forest MTB Challenge would continue to grow, drawing even more cyclists to support the essential cause of education and conservation.
