Kwale residents practicing farming are set to benefit from free certified seeds from the Kwale county government.

Governor Fatuma Achani officially launched the distribution of seeds to farmers across all the 20 wards at the Kwale Headquarters office.

Achani launched the program with about 45 tonnes of seeds issued set to be distributed to farmers across the entire county.

She said the county government is committed to support farmers.

Achani noted that Agriculture is a priority for economic growth and food security while encouraging local farmers to take advantage of the initiative to improve productivity, especially with the anticipated rains.

” We want to equip our farmers with the necessary inputs for planting as we welcome the long awaited rains”, she added.

The governor also encouraged farmers to plant more trees during the long rain season in order to increase forest cover in mitigating climate change.

Kwale county Agriculture executive member Roman Shera praised the county government’s efforts and urged farmers to make full use of the provided seeds.

One of the local’s farmer Mercy Chalika, expressed gratitude to the government for the initiative, saying that the seeds will greatly benefit the community.

The seed distribution is a collaborative effort between the Department of Agriculture and Department of Lands, Environment and Natural resources under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program to support farmers by providing seeds, likely as part of efforts to enhance climate resilience.

This initiative will help farmers adopt drought-resistant crops, improve food security, and strengthen adaptation to climate change.

The distribution of seeds includes maize, cowpeas, green grams and rice

To ensure the success of the farming season, the county government has put in place additional support, including training programs for farmers, provision of seeds and fertilizers, tractor services to assist with land preparation and has employed extension officers to offer technical support to farmers.

With these measures, the Kwale County government aims to boost food production and improve the livelihoods of local farmers.
