The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is facing internal resistance over its 2027 electoral strategy.

ODM National Acting Secretary General Catherine Omanyo has strongly opposed the proposed zoning of political party strongholds, declaring that the party’s traditional backyards must remain untouched.

Addressing an energized delegation of party representatives from Lungalunga Constituency in Kwale County, Omanyo drew a firm line against the proposal. She insisted that restricting candidates through zoning is not a viable option for politicians eyeing elective seats in the upcoming 2027 General Election.

She said that county leaders should be left to decide crucial matters regarding the party matters ahead of 2027 general election.

Beyond the zoning debate, Omanyo took a swipe at nomination irregularities, asserting that ODM would fiercely protect the interests of its local base.

She stated that the party will not allow “aliens” or outsiders to be awarded special nomination seats at the expense of loyal, registered Kwale County party members.

“I know this will not go well with some people and they may want my removal but am prepared because we can’t allow it any more as a party,” she said.

he firm stance addresses growing anxieties among local aspirants who fear that pre-election coalition pacts might lock them out of the ballot or hand crucial nomination slots to non-residents.

The delegates’ meeting also amplified local support for Omanyo’s leadership.

Following the recent outster of Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna  Kwale ODM leaders called on the party’s National Executive Committee to officially confirm Omanyo as the substantive Secretary General.

Sifuna’s removal, which was formally ratified by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, cleared the way for Omanyo to steer the party’s administrative docket in an acting capacity.

Coast leaders now argue that confirming her permanently will provide the stability ODM needs to secure its strongholds.
