The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) is set to open a new office in Kwale County next month to strengthen efforts in combating drug and substance abuse in the region.

The move comes amid growing concerns over the increasing availability of illicit substances in Kwale, particularly along smuggling routes in Kinango sub-county.

NACADA Director Ali Swaleh Mazrui said the office will play a crucial role in addressing the rising cases of drug smuggling and consumption.

According to Mazrui, NACADA’s latest report indicates that Kwale is among the most affected counties, with Kinango sub-county identified as a key drug trafficking route.

“We will open a new office here and deploy officers in various sub-counties since our report shows that Kinango is being used as a drug smuggling route,” he said.

He spoke during a drug awareness and sensitization campaign drive in Kinango.

The event was sponsored by Search For Common Ground in partnership with NACADA, as part of ongoing efforts to curb drug abuse and promote a safer, healthier society.

He noted that the new office will also intensify awareness campaigns against drug abuse, targeting both the general public and learning institutions.

The agency aims to educate communities on the dangers of substance abuse and empower them to take preventive measures.

Mazrui further said that the NACADA’s latest report also indicates that schools in the county have been significantly affected, with students increasingly falling victim to drug consumption.

He expressed concern that the rise in drug abuse among learners and young people is not only ruining their lives but also threatening the region’s future.

“As per our report, our learning institutions have been affected by drug consumption, which is destroying the lives of young learners and the youth,” he said.

Mazrui said the situation is not yet alarming but the agency and other stakeholders must act swiftly to address the situation before escalating to a crisis in the near future.

He said NACADA doesn’t want youth to be affected hence taking a proactive role to curb the vice and ensure young people have healthy and prosperous lives.

Mazrui further mentioned that the new office is expected to work closely with local authorities, schools, and community leaders to implement rehabilitation programs and stricter enforcement measures against drug traffickers.

He sais NACADA also plans to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to dismantle drug supply networks and ensure that those involved face legal action.

Mazrui said increased awareness and sensitization programs will help reduce the inflow of drugs and protect vulnerable populations from falling into addiction in the region.

He also warned bar operators against violating rules and regulations for liquor licensing.

The officer said the liquor business owners must maintain a distance of 500 meters away from residential and learning institutions.

He reminded the local mnazi pubs to ensure proper sanitation by having toilets and enough water for better hygiene.

Mazrui warned that the NACADA officers are vigilant and will enhance frequent cracksdowns to arrest the law offender.

He said NACADA is also looking forward to working with religious leaders to intensify campaigns against drugs and substance use at grassroots level.

Mazrui urged residents to support the initiative by reporting drug-related activities and participating in community outreach programs aimed at creating a drug-free society.
