Tana Delta Sub County residents in Tana River County have been urged to make use of the short rains that have started being experienced in the area to farm and avoid reliance on relief food.

Tana River county is among those that are affected by drought in the country leaving pastoralists and farmers counting huge losses.

This is after crops failed and animals continue to die of hunger.

At least 300 households at Bilisa village received assorted food and non- food items from the Humanity First Kenya organization to help them pass through the hunger situation.

Bilisa location chief  Nuru Dokota Barisa said that the relief food will help them in a big deal during such difficult moment.

“I urge my people to make use of the rains to cultivate their land even as you continue getting help from various organizations because rains are here already ” she said.

Mohamed Abdi said that they are hopeful that the short rains will enable grass to grow so that their animals can get enough food, hence reducing the effects of drought.

“We depend on animals and not everyone owns them. The prices of the animals are very low now due to the ongoing drought,” he said.

Director of operations at Humanity First Kenya Ismael Choma said that they responded to calls by President William Ruto who is rallying organizations and individuals to help people affected by drought.

“It is our resolve as an organization to help provide relief food to drought stricken residents and this ration will sustain them for two weeks,” he said

Elsewhere in Kwale national government county and non governmental organizations are distributing relief food in affected areas of Kinango LungaLunga and some parts of Msambweni and Matuga.

It is estimated that about 200,000 people are facing starvation in the area.
