Chasimba police station management in Kilifi county is on the spot after a 42 years old Isaac Ngombo Lewa allegedly committed suicide using his innerwear inside the cells.
Human rights organizations have raised a red flag over the matter saying those responsible must be brought to book for the death of Ngombo Lewa.
They poked holes in the police report that the deceased Isaack Ngombo Lewa used a boxer (his innerwear) to commit suicide inside the police cells.
Since Lewa had physical injuries on his backΒ family,Haki Africa and Pwani social justice says there is more than meet the eye on the matter that led to Lewa death.
According OB Number 10/2/1/2023 that Coast Times Digital has seen clearly indicate that Lewa committed suicide.
“The Sub County Criminal Investigation Officer Kilifi North, OCS and other officersΒ visited the cell and found the deceased body lying on the floor close to the door of the cells with is boxer nearby,” reads the report.
The police report further claims that Pauline Akinyi Okeyo, the deceased wife had brought food to her husband when they discovered the deceased body wasΒ lying close to the cell door,Β his neck tied by a boxer.
“Police tried untying the boxer from the neck only to realize that his body was motionless,β added the report that has shocked the family.
It is claimed that the deceased was arrested for allegedly attempted arson and taken to Chasimba police station.
His father Lewa Tinga told Coast Times Digital the government must intervene and ensure justice to the family.
HAKI Africa program officer Mathias Shipeta called on DCI, IPOA, and all investigating bodies to unravel the truth for the family and the world to what caused Lewa death.
After being arrested on 31 December 2022 Lewa was found dead on 2 January 2023, a situation the family is yet to come to terms with.
When Coast Times Digital visited the family, the deceased wife Pauline was still in shock over the death.
- “I visited Chonyi Police Station to give my husband food only to find him dead.Β TheΒ officers who were on duty laughed at me when i told them i had come to give him food. I asked them to call him but instead they broke into laughters, ” he narrated.
According to her, one of the officers then agreed to take her to the police cells where she found her husband lying as foam came out of his mouth with folded hand.
“I was shocked and examined him realised that there was a boxer on his neck toΒ mean he had committed suicide. Police refused to rush him to hospital and that is when I also learnt that he had some injuries on his back,” saidΒ troubled Akinyi.
The mother of four wants full investigation into the matter conducted thoroughly by all concerned groups for justice to prevail claiming that his husband was killed.
She said that her husband was the only breadwinner in the family.
“I have a breastfeeding child and i dont know how i will take care of the rest. I relied on my husband and washing cloths job for the police at Chonyi police station. Now my husbandis gone i dont know what to do,”she said.
Pwani Social Justice officer Simon Kaingu said that police in charge of the station must take responsible for the death sinxe it happened under police custody.
“That is the fourth case to record of suicide in Kilifi County,” added.
The Body of the deceased is lying at the Kilifi County hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem report.
