The ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs has banned swimming in public beaches across the country beyond 5:30pm.
It has also banned swimming of individuals who are drunk.
Speakiing Congo Beach in Kwale County Cabinet Secretary in charge of the ministry Salim Mvurya has said there is a multi agency team from relevant agencies has been instructed to enforce the ban in the Indian Ocean and Lake Victoria.
This follows an incident in Pyrates Beach in Mombasa where 11 people were involved in boat tragedy that left two dead.
Mvurya says the officers will start a crackdown on unseaworthy boats, enforce proper use of life jackets and inspect the jackets’ standards.
He says the ministry has noted some beach operators are using unseaworthy vessels due to high numbers of holiday makers.
