Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani has mourned the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a true statesman, gallant defender of democracy, and fearless reformist whose selfless leadership transformed Kenya’s political landscape.

Raila Odinga passed on, on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, in India, where he had been receiving medical treatment.

In her condolence message, Achani hailed Raila as a towering figure whose decades of struggle and sacrifice helped lay the foundations of a more democratic and inclusive Kenya.

She said his unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and unity inspired generations and changed the course of the nation’s history.

“Hon. Raial’s resilience and vision laid the foundation for a freer, fairer, and more inclusive nation. He will forever be remembered for his tireless dedication to building a Kenya where every citizen has a voice, and every community has a place at the table,” Achani said.

The governor noted that Raila’s lifelong fight for multi-party democracy and his instrumental role in the birth of the 2010 Constitution gave rise to stronger institutions and deeper respect for the rule of law.

She said his efforts shaped the governance framework that continues to empower devolved units such as Kwale County to chart their own paths of development.

Achani lauded Raila for his steadfast belief in devolution, saying his advocacy for equitable distribution of resources enabled counties to improve service delivery and uplift millions from poverty.

She said his commitment to electoral accountability, institutional reforms, and devolution ushered in a new era of governance that brought services closer to the people and gave counties like Kwale the power to determine their destinies.

The governor also praised Raila for championing development, affirmative action, and gender equality, noting that he consistently pushed for women’s representation and empowerment in leadership.

“Raila will be remembered as a tireless champion of inclusion. His courage and belief in women’s leadership opened doors for many of us who now serve in various capacities across the country,” Achani added.

She said Raila’s visionary leadership and moral courage inspired both seasoned and upcoming leaders to embrace integrity, resilience, and selflessness in public service.

Achani added that the former prime minister’s legacy will live on in the democratic freedoms Kenyans now enjoy, in devolved governance that strengthens counties, and in the indomitable spirit of a people united by hope and progress.

She further extended her heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and supporters of the late leader, describing his death as a monumental loss to the nation.

“On behalf of the people of Kwale, I pray that the Almighty God grants comfort to his family and strength to all Kenyans as we mourn this national hero. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his legacy continue to guide us toward a more united and prosperous Kenya,” Achani said in a press statement.
