A Form three student from Kwale High School died on Wednesday evening after collapsing during a football match with his classmates.
The student, identified as Victor Titi, reportedly felt dizzy and fainted while playing on the school field alongside about 21 other Form Three boys just before the lunch break.
According to Kwale County Director of Education Ahmed Abdi, the student sat down after feeling unwell and was assisted off the pitch by his peers.
When his condition failed to improve, students called the school nurse and members of the St John Ambulance club, who administered first aid before rushing him to Kwale level four Hospital.
Ann Nyambura, the nursing officer in charge at Kwale Hospital, confirmed that the student was already dead upon arrival.
"He was brought in by his colleagues and the school nurse," Nyambura stated. "Upon arriving at the casualty wing, the clinician on duty examined him and confirmed that it was a lifeless body."
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has visited the scene and launched an official probe to ascertain the exact cause of death.
The Ministry of Education indicated that a postmortem examination will be conducted.
The school management stated that the matter is now entirely in the hands of the police and that the incident occurred as the students played football before lunch break.
The student's parents have been notified and have already visited the hospital.
His body is being kept at Kwale level four hospital mortuary as investigators wait for postmortem to ascertain the cause of death.
