Opposition leaders have accused the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) of operating without independence, alleging that the electoral body has been captured by the government and has excluded the opposition from consultations ahead of the next general election.
The leaders said the 2027 election belongs to all Kenyans and not to select groups.
They were speaking on Thursday during the burial of former High Court Judge Justice Joseph Mbalu Mutava at Kithasyu in Kibwezi East, Makueni County. Justice Mutava was the husband of Kibwezi East MP Jessica Mbalu.
Led by Wiper Democratic Front Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka leaders maintained that the IEBC is not free and fair in its current form.
DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa and DP party leader Justin Muturi took issue with President William Ruto’s administration over what they termed as continued violation of human rights.
They strongly condemned the alleged abduction of an editor working with the Standard Media Group, saying press freedom must be respected and protected.
They insisted that the opposition remains united and will not relent in its bid to remove President Ruto from office in next year’s general election.
Meanwhile, family and friends eulogized Justice Mutava as a legal icon and a towering figure in the Judiciary, noting that his death has left a gap that will be hard to fill.
Justice Mutava, 55, died on August 22 after collapsing at his rural home in Kithasyu.
