UDA Grassroots Nominations Rerun Records Massive Turnout in Lamu

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has successfully conducted a repeat round of its grassroots nominations in Lamu County, recording a turnout of approximately 15,000 party members, a dramatic rise from the roughly 2,000 who took part in the first round held in July, whose outcome was disputed and later annulled.

The July exercise had been marred by complaints from aspirants and party members across both Lamu East and Lamu West constituencies, prompting Lamu Governor Issa Timamy, who doubles as UDA’s Deputy Party Leader, to call for a fresh nomination exercise in the two constituencies.

Speaking to the media on Sunday evening, Governor Timamy said the rerun had recorded an impressive turnout that would strengthen the party’s grassroots structures ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“This nomination process had a good turnout, and it will help us build the kind of infrastructure that we need to campaign and guarantee victory for the Kenya Kwanza coalition in 2027,” Timamy said.

He noted that all aspirants — from the ward level through to the constituency, Woman Representative and Senate races — had participated in and supported the process, adding that the results would now offer a genuine reflection of UDA’s popularity in Lamu County.

“These results are a true measure of how popular UDA is in Lamu, especially given the scale of infrastructure development that the national government under President Ruto continues to roll out in the county,” he said.

Lamu Woman Representative aspirant Nana Mote echoed the Governor’s sentiments, urging UDA members across the county to continue rallying behind the party. She linked the party’s fortunes in Lamu to the progress of the long-awaited Lamu oil refinery project associated with Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote.

“It is only by supporting the Ruto administration, which has been instrumental in working out the Dangote-linked refinery, that we can ensure the project stays the course,” Mote said, adding that the national government was keen on seeing construction begin this year.

Meanwhile, Lamu Senate aspirant Francis Mugo commended the UDA Lamu organizing team for ensuring the nominations were conducted peacefully. He said the improved turnout was proof of the party’s growing popularity in the county.

“The good turnout we have witnessed in these nominations reflects the popularity of the party, and this is likely to translate into UDA winning most of the seats in Lamu come 2027,” Mugo said.
