Kwale County Governor Fatuma Achani has issued a stern warning to local leaders against inciting youth to violence amid the growing threat of juvenile gangs in the region.
She expressed deep concern over the rising cases of attacks linked to the notorious “Panga Boys” gang, which she believes are politically instigated.
Achani accused certain politicians of fueling the vice by holding clandestine meetings with the juvenile gangs and inciting them under the pretext of addressing unemployment.
She noted that instead of guiding the youth toward productive activities, the leaders are exploiting their frustrations for personal and political gain.
“The majority of these gang members are below the age of 17, which means they should be in school and not seeking employment,” she said.
Achani said that allowing young people to be drawn into crime not only endangers their future but also threatens the region’s overall peace and security.
The governor warned that such acts of political incitement will only lead to increased division, lawlessness, and economic instability.
She reiterated that Kwale County, being a major tourism hub, risks suffering economic setbacks if criminal activities continue unchecked.
“Tourism is the backbone of our economy, and any form of insecurity will drive away investors and tourists, ultimately leading to job losses and economic decline,” she said.
The governor reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to maintaining law and order, stating that they will not allow a few individuals to undermine the peace and security that have been nurtured over the years.
The county boss firmly said that no one has the right to attack others simply because they are unemployed.
She said that frustration over joblessness should never be used as an excuse for violence and criminal activities.
Achani urged young people to seek legal and productive ways to improve their livelihoods, assuring them that her administration is working on initiatives to create more opportunities for them.
The governor told the youth to take advantage of the bursary program and get the required education and build their lives.
She said that Kwale County has made great strides in fostering stability and development, and any attempts to disrupt this progress will be met with firm action.
Achani called on security agencies to intensify their crackdown on criminal gangs and ensure that those found guilty of inciting violence face the full force of the law.
She also urged parents, teachers, and community leaders to take a proactive role in mentoring and guiding young people away from crime.
Achani spoke while launching the construction of solar powered street lights in Diani, Msambweni sub-county.
The project stretches from Tandoori to Baobab beach hotel in Ukunda ward and stretches from ABSA bank to Jacaranda Hotel.
According to Achani, the project aims at improving security and enhancing public safety along the beach line which is a source of employment for many Kwale residents.
She said the initiative is part of her administration’s efforts to bring massive development and open up tourism and employment opportunities.
“The solar-powered streetlights will not only enhance security but also contribute to the growth of business, environmental sustainability and energy efficiency,” she said.
She called for community vigilance, urging residents to safeguard the new infrastructure against vandalism for sustainable development.
