Detectives in Likoni, Mombasa County, are pursuing two men accused of fatally stabbing a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier during a confrontation outside a private hospital.
The incident, which unfolded on the night of Wednesday, February 5, has sent shockwaves in the community.
The slain soldier, 32-year-old Dennis Wesonga Wanjala, a Kenya Navy officer stationed in Mtongwe, had visited St. Thomas Maternity Hospital in Kona Mpya along the Likoni-Ukunda highway.
He was accompanied by his colleague, identified only as Masai, to check on a female patient admitted earlier that day.
The woman, Sharon Munywoki, had been rushed to the facility after developing complications from an ectopic pregnancy, a life-threatening condition where a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus.
However, what started as a routine hospital visit took a dark turn. A dispute erupted between the two men, quickly escalating into a heated exchange.
Hospital security intervened, asking them to take their argument outside to avoid disturbing other patients. But once outside, tempers flared further, culminating in a violent altercation.
Eyewitnesses say Wesonga was attacked with a crude weapon, suffering a deep stab wound to the chest.
His attackers fled the scene immediately, leaving behind two women and a critically injured Wesonga.
Masai, alongside good Samaritans, rushed the wounded soldier to Likoni District Hospital.
Unfortunately, doctors pronounced him dead just five minutes after arrival, citing excessive internal bleeding.
Police have confirmed that they have identified the suspects and are actively tracking them down.
While the exact cause of the dispute remains unclear, investigations are ongoing to uncover what led to the tragic killing of the father of two.
