The opening of the modern Kwale Stadium by President William Ruto two years ago during the Mashujaa Day celebrations hosted in Kwale County marked a new chapter for sportsmen, sportswomen, and fans in the county.
The state-of-the-art Kwale Stadium, the first of its kind in the Coast region, has a seating capacity of approximately 13,000 spectators. It was constructed through a partnership between the Kwale County Government and the National Government.
According to Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani, the stadium has elevated Kwale County’s status in Kenyan sports, as it has become a preferred venue for national football clubs and major league competitions.
“The stadium meets FIFA standards and has therefore been able to host the 2026 Mozzart Bet Cup and Kenya Premier League matches. Renowned clubs such as Bandari FC, Ulinzi Stars, Tusker FC, Kenya Police FC, Bidco United, among others, have also used the facility,” said Governor Achani.
Governor Achani added that the Kwale County Government has also constructed 24 smaller sports grounds across the county to encourage young people to participate in sports instead of engaging in drug and substance abuse.
“Our objective as a government is to expand access to quality sports infrastructure for talent development, recreation, and community participation across the county,” the Governor added.
The Governor further urged Kwale County youths to take advantage of the available sports facilities to nurture and develop their talents.
Sports stakeholders in Kwale County, led by Kwale United coach Hamisi Masusa, praised the county government’s efforts in constructing the stadium, saying it has created more opportunities for local athletes to showcase and develop their talents.
“This stadium has given our players a platform to compete at a higher level and dream bigger. It has inspired young people to pursue sports professionally, knowing they now have a world-class facility right here in Kwale,” said Masusa.
Residents Matano Mwinyi and Doni Mwema also commended the Kwale County Government for its commitment to improving the sports sector and investing in sports infrastructure across the county. Adding the initiative will create opportunities for young people to earn a living through sports.
