Relief has come to thousands of residents across Kwale County as public healthcare services resume following a breakthrough agreement.

The Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) has officially called off its strike after reaching a consensus with the administration of Governor Fatuma Achani.

The industrial action, which severely paralyzed local health facilities, came to an end after a high-stakes consultative meeting between union leaders and county officials successfully broken the deadlock.

Clinicians have been directed to return to their duty stations with immediate effect.

    Resolving a Care Crisis

The standoff was triggered by deep-seated issues that clinical officers argued were undermining their welfare and crippling service delivery.

They included delays in executing the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), stagnant promotions, unpaid salary arrears, and critical understaffing in local dispensaries and hospitals.

The newly signed pact provides definitive solutions to the long-standing friction points:

Kwale governor Fatuma Achani said that her administration is committed to implementing structured career progression guidelines.

The move establishes absolute clarity regarding entry points, promotions, and job re-designations, ensuring clinical staff can systematically advance in their professions.

Governor Achani also noted that in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the county has will fast-track the transition of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) personnel.

These contractual workers will now receive Permanent and Pensionable (P&P) appointment letters, addressing a core demand for job security.

    A Victory for Consensus

Achani lauded the collaborative effort of all parties involved while welcoming the truce.

She underscored that choosing structured dialogue over continued gridlock prioritized both the well-being of essential frontline workers and the fundamental health needs of Kwale’s citizens

Union representatives expressed optimism about the quick implementation of the agreed terms, paving the way for a more stable human resource environment across Kwale’s medical sector.
