Kwale County Governor Fatuma Achani has officially launched the solarization of 28 boreholes across the county at Jeza Village in Tsimba Golini Ward, Matuga Sub-county.
The launch is part of ongoing efforts to enhance access to clean and safe water across the county.
The project is being implemented through a partnership between the Kwale County Government and the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC).
Speaking during the launch, Governor Achani noted that her administration has so far drilled over 100 boreholes and constructed 70 water pans across the sub-counties of Matuga, Msambweni, Samburu, Kinango, and Lungalunga.
She emphasized that the county government remains committed to strengthening water infrastructure to ensure residents have adequate water for domestic use, livestock, and irrigation.
βOur goal is to ensure every household in Kwale County has access to clean and reliable water. These solar-powered boreholes will not only reduce the cost of water production but also promote sustainable development through the use of renewable energy,β said Governor Achani.
A representative from REREC, Samuel Olela, affirmed the corporationβs commitment to working closely with county governments to expand access to water and energy infrastructure across the country.
βAs REREC, we will continue partnering with county governments to implement projects that improve livelihoods. Access to water and clean energy is key to socio-economic development,β said Olela.
Jeza Village Chairman Omar Dosho expressed gratitude to the county government and welcomed the project, saying it will ease the burden of accessing clean and safe water.
βFor a long time, we have struggled to find clean water, often walking long distances. This project will transform our lives by bringing water closer to our homes,β said Dosho.
Those present included CEC Member for Water Hemed Mwabudzo, CEC Member for Lands Saumu Mahaja, Chief Officer for Water Badru Shikeli, Economic Advisor Anthony Yama, directors, administrators, and other county officials.
